From the vibrant Leeds jazz scene, Jasmine are wonderful quintet led by alto saxophonist Jasmine Whalley, with Ben Haskins (guitar), Jasper Green (piano), Owen Burns (electric bass), George Hall (drums).
They mix a thoughtful lyricism with dynamic and approachable grooves, bringing together a distinctive contemporary sound that reflects a diverse set of influences from Kenny Wheeler and Soweto Kinch to Bonobo, and MF Doom.
Selected to be part of the prestigious Jazz North Introduces scheme in 2018, they’ve since produced two excellent EPs ‘Bring to Light’ and a single ‘Blackout’, and played across the North, including Manchester, Marsden and Scarborough Jazz Festivals, and Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here Festival.
You may have caught members of this band previously at The Lescar or any number of venues with the ace Têtes de Pois band. Jasmine were due to play at The Lescar last March until lockdown happened, so we’re absolutely delighted to welcome them at last to Sheffield.
Here’s a link to their recent Leeds gig at Brudenell Social Club, as part of Leeds legend DJ Lubi’s Jazzland Sessions:
Its a really perfect gig for a summers evening, fresh and energetic new music, so please do join us at Yellow Arch Studios for this gig, its just £12 to get in for 5 really wonderful musicians and one of the best new bands around.
