Music As Medicine: **SOLD OUT** A Journey In Time - Modern Cosmology meets Indian Classical Music for an Exploration of Time

Music As Medicine presents a unique event bringing together modern cosmology and Indian classical music to explore concepts of time.
Our guides on this journey will include world renowned musicians of the Hindustani tradition and an international astrophysics researcher.

A Solo performance on Tabla by Ustad Babar Latif Khan from Delhi, accompanied by Ustad Surjeet Singh on the Sarangi, will be followed by a Raag on Sitar by Jonathan Mayer.  The finale will be an improvisation between the musicians.

Dr Boris Bolliet, a young researcher in astrophysics at The University of Manchester will present a short talk on the concept of time in physics, philosophy and music.

In between live performances, DJ Judas Duerden will mix an eclectic set of music blending traditional sounds from across the globe with contemporary electronica.

USTAD BABAR LATIF KHAN

Babar Latif Khan is a son of a Tabla Legend Late Ustad Latif Ahmed Khan. He learned Tabla from his father starting at the age of 5.

Babar Latif Khan is one of the most accomplished and distinctive tabla players of his generation with a reputation for technical virtuosity, spontaneity, clarity of tone, and sensitivity to melody. Today he is one of the main representant of the Delhi Gharana, the oldest of the Tabla Gharanas in India.

Apart from being a dynamic soloist, he is a highly sought after accompanist who has performed with some of most celebrated Hindustani classical musicians, including Sitar Maestro Ustad Shaheed Parvez Saheb.

Ustad Babar Latif Khan has been invited to perform at many international festival and concerts, in
Brazil, Canada and in the UK where he played at the Royal Albert Hall in London accompanying Pandit Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra.

JONATHAN MAYER

Son of the late renowned Kolkata composer John Mayer, Jonathan Mayer began his musical training at the early age of 5. He initially trained under the western sitarist Clem Alford, a disciple of Sachindra Nath
Saha from the Senia Gharana. Later he studied Imdadkhani Gharana technical proficiency under Ustad Wajahat Khan and finally settled in to the Senia Veenkar Gharana under the late Sitar Maestro Pandit Subroto Roychowdhury.

Jonathan Mayer has performed all over the world. He has played with renowned musician across a variety of genres with artists such as Future Sounds of London, Kumar Bose and Sir Paul McCartney.

In addition, his music compositions have been commissioned by prestigious institutions including The London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra.

USTAD SURJEET SINGH

One of the world’s most skilled sarangi players, Surjeet was initiated into Indian Classical Music by Satguru Jagjit Singh of the Naamdhari panth, and is now based in the UK. He spent 15 years of his life in
training with Pundit Ram Narayan and in recent years, received guidance from Pundit Hanuman Prasad Mishra (Banaras Gharana). Ustad Ji has performed at concerts & venues throughout the world and his music has been used for TV broadcast in the UK.

BORIS BOLLIET

Boris Bolliet is a researcher in astrophysics at The University of Manchester. His current research focuses on the spectral distortions of the relic radiation, benefiting from the guidance of Jens Chluba, one of
the world leading experts in the field.

He completed his PhD in France in 2017 under the supervision of physicist, philosopher and
ecologist Aurélien Barrau. Hi PhD research was on a cosmological model based on Loop Quantum Gravity, the theory of space-time pioneered by Carlo Rovelli, author of the two best-sellers "Seven Brief Lessons of Physics" and "The Order of Time".
During his talk, he will present the main ideas in physics and philosophy that shape our understanding of
the concept of Time as well as emphasising on its relationship with Rhythm and Music.
