Description:

Spend a day exploring Birmingham – Britain’s second largest city with a history dating back hundreds of years. The city has been a major influence over British life, becoming a centre of trade and industry, culture and technology, as well as being home to numerous international communities.

There is plenty to see and do in the area, some within the city centre, and some a little further out – Birmingham has fantastic public transport, so getting around is easy – just remember you will need to plan your travel! See here for info - Transport information | Birmingham City Council

Some family favourites include infamous Cadbury World, an amazing experience for chocolate lovers, or check out the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and its many amazing creations.

The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham Aquarium is a wonderful experience, where you can see the UK's only 360° Ocean Tunnel. It is located at the heart of Birmingham’s Canal network – there are more canals in Birmingham than Venice, and the surrounding area is filled with restaurants and culture for you to explore

Birmingham is a welcoming and friendly city, and nothing shows this more than its historical role as a home to immigrants arriving in the UK. There are a huge variety of cultures that exist side-by-side here from areas including India, Africa, South-East Asia, Ireland and many more.

Following the Second World War, Birmingham welcomed many immigrants from China and Hong Kong. There is now a thriving and distinct Chinese community in the city, centred around the Chinese Quarter – Birmingham’s ‘Chinatown’ – we really recommend checking it out.

The city is also an important centre for LGBT+ people within the UK, and a vibrant Gay Quarter has developed near to the Chinese Quarter. This is a vibrant and eclectic area with many shops, bars and other businesses supporting and owned by members of the LGBT+ community – it is well worth a visit.

If you fancy some shopping, then our drop off and pick-up point, Bullring & Grand Central, is the perfect place for you to spend a couple of hours, with brands such as Coach, Lacoste, Kate Spade and many more!

There's loads more to explore within too, you could take a stroll down to see the Walk of Stars, catch a bus to soak up on some history and visit the Edwardian Winterbourne House and Garden - A Unique Heritage Attraction, or even check out the 250 year old watermill famous for its association with author J.R.R Tolkien, Sarehole Mill | Birmingham Museums.

You can read more about what there is to see and do in Birmingham here: Visit Birmingham

We’re not able to provide a ‘guided tour’ of Birmingham, so we suggest making some plans for your time there before you go. We are also hosting a Meet-Up Mixer for those of you who are coming along to Birmingham – this is a chance to meet others coming along and possibly plan some things to do together – head here for info - GO! Social: Virtual Mixer - Birmingham at Swansea University, Swansea on 3rd Feb 2022 | Fatsoma

Please be aware that for some of the attractions, you will have to pre-book your tickets.

We hope you'll come along on this enjoyable day away!
