First off, stop whatever you are doing, and give yourself a pat on the back. You picked the right side. The Welsh Varsity is the biggest and best Varsity in Wales and our Green & White Army is stronger than ever. It started back in 1997 and has been going ever since.
The Initial Welsh Varsity Match was played in 1997 in the Welsh Capital and home of Cardiff Rugby Football Club, Cardiff Arms Park. The game was played by the two principal Welsh Universities; Swansea and Cardiff. In the initial few years, the Welsh Varsity Match was held alternatively at Cardiff Arms Park and St Helens, the home of Swansea Rugby Club. In 2003 and until 2007 the game was held at the neutral ground of the Brewery field in Bridgend.
In 2008 the event moved back to Cardiff Arms Park, it subsequently moved to the Liberty Stadium (now the Swansea.com Stadium) in 2010 and then to the Millennium Stadium. In 2015 the day came for the event to move pack to Swansea after a 4-year hiatus.
Here in the Swansea Camp we are more serious than ever this year to win the Shield, especially as Swansea is hosting again this year. On the day there will be 800 athletes competing at 40 Sports that will be viewed by 15000 Spectators.
When The Welsh Varsity was first initiated, the renowned rugby match was watched by 900 spectators, whereas last time we hosted we had a record of over 16,000 people watching the game in the then Liberty Stadium. Undeniably, the main attraction for the day is the sporting matches which are taking place left, right and centre. However don’t be fooled by thinking that that is all that will be going on. This year we are very lucky to be supported by some huge brands helping us to deliver entertainment throughout across multiple fan zones.
Our city, our ground, our trophy.
