Bio:
What is a nastyfunk? Some would say that it’s a crude description of Erik Christiansen’s music, but the UK born producer has his own thoughts. “It’s that facial expression you do when you hear a ridiculous tune for the first time”, he says. And it’s something he should know a bit about. Since 2012, Erik and his label have been responsible for over 50 Beatport top 100 releases.A cocktail of house grooves, techno attitude and hip-hop vibes, its a sound has found itself recently on labels like 303Lovers, Under No Illusion, Resonance Records, Be One Records, Cr2, Nervous, Happy Techno, and Erik’s own ‘NastyFunk Records’. Cue an endless chain of support, and regular love from dons such as Marco Carola, Steve Lawler, Jamie Jones, Camelphat, Luciano, Joseph Capriati, Lee Foss, Maceo Plex and Richie Hawtin.Having grown up in Liverpool - a city that lives and breathes clubbing, culture and music - Erik made his first steps when he launched his label in 2011. Shortly after that his maiden EP ‘Cosmic Girl’ was a commercial success, gaining major FM airplay, spending months in the charts, and getting dropped by Solomun on his BBC Radio 1 Essential mix. Success came fast and within a year Erik had already played at venues like Pacha (London), D Edge (Sao Paulo), Club Lola (Shanghai) and La Plage (f. Ushuaia, Ibiza). The foundations of a journey he hasn’t looked back on.“Soul, rock, hip-hop, world music, jazz, classical, funk, it all works for me…” Erik says of his influences. “It just has to make me feel something… it has to be fun”. Clearly that emphasis on ‘fun’ is very prominent when listening to Erik’s music - “taking a life of its own, trying to throw you off guard”. Punchy kicks, swingy grooves, top end energy and contagious percussion take over the mix, not to forget memorable bass riffs, hooky vocal snippets and the obligatory weird and unique sounds. The perfect concoction to keep the underground dance-floor interested. With two Ibiza residencies already under his belt, headline festival appearances, and a worldwide touring history that has seen gigs across Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, Erik’s name is established and rising in the scene. Add to that a burgeoning relationship with David Museen, and we hear an extra level of intensity to his musical playbook. With upcoming releases on Deeplomatic, Oblack, Under No Illusion, 1994 Music, Witty Tunes and New Violence, Erik looks to continue rising upwards in the house and techno world.
