The Surlings and Caravella are playing at the White Horse in Twerton. Come along and we'll have a fantastic time.
Caravella 9PM
The Surlings 10PM
The Surlings are an indie pop band based in Bath, yet that seems an inadequate description. Comprised of Welsh Jacob Howells, whose ethereal, silky smooth voice breathes through insightful lyrics, Cornish Hugh Wilkin, whose compelling production and drumming propels the songs forward, and Londoner Jacob Hodder whose funky and understated bass exposes the intricacy and depth of each song. The Surlings push the boundaries of modern ‘pop’, think 60’s rock, soul and psychedelia fused with delicate and sometimes folk-like lyrics and instrumentation. It’s a concoction that’ll disarm and stun any music lover, permeating all genres and stitching them together to create ‘Put Your Hands Together’, their first EP.
Caravella’s songs feel like a story told over morning coffee with a close friend. The three bedroom producers--- Charlie Sellers [Vocals, Guitar], Otto Cox [Bass] and Jack Spooner [Vocals, Guitar]--- tell the stories though a fun, light-hearted and quintessentially British set, creating an “abstract and quirky” visual presence [Quote from Pete Josef] inspired by the modern Bedroom Pop Artists such as Gus Dapperton, Vansire and Boy Pablo.
The boys began denting the Bath music scene in Winter 2019, with Jack Spooner scouting the other band members and merging on a swift journey of self-producing their first singles and performing to events of crowds of 100+ at Moles (Bath), returning to the venue during the Coronavirus pandemic to sell out the socially- distanced seating with local legends We Are Parkas.
Caravella’s debut release ‘Welcome to Europa’ is a dreamy yet energetic “catchy earworm” with a “steady breeziness towards being played a fool”. Currently amassing 5000 Spotify streams in just the first year since its release, the band secured ‘Track of the week’ on BBC Radio Bristol with Adam Crowther, who played their song twice in the opening night stating “this is a beauty”.
“When was the last time you stumbled across a band that wasn’t just haphazardly smashing every instrument in sight and instead, opted for a smooth and chilled out, almost hypnotic approach that feels like musical therapy? Well, the Caravella lads are just that.”- Mercury Magazine
