It is a truth universally acknowledged that boy/girl duos have produced some of the heartbreakingly fabulous moments in pop history. Think Ike & Tina Turner, The Carpenters, Serge Gainsborough & Jane Birkin, The White Stripes, Esther & Abi Ofarim et al. To this hallowed roll call please welcome Vona Vela, a new duo from Leicestershire featuring the irresistible baritone of Dan Cunningham and the delicious harmonies of Izzy Davis.

Vona Vella are twenty year old singer, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Izzy and Dan. The band were formed in Autumn 2020 and released their first single, ‘Sun’ (mixed by Ross Godfrey from Morcheeba). Once released it proved an instant viral hit, racking up over 1 million streams worldwide. Vona Vella released their debut EP ‘Go Outside Forever,’ in early 2022, which caught the adoration of Paul Heaton and in January of this year a remix of the title track from the EP, ’Go Outside Forever,’ was featured in the hugely successful NBA2K23 video game. The single came to the attention of Peter Doherty who immediately fell in love with their glorious harmonising vocals and signed them up to Strap Originals.

Both Izzy and Dan co-wrote all the songs on the “Go Outside Forever” EP; Dan playing the piano and guitar and Izzy playing guitar and flute. The EP was recorded at The Albion Rooms in Margate and produced by Mike Moore (Baxter Dury/Liam Gallagher). Izzy and Dan were joined on these sessions by Mark Neary - bass (Noel Gallagher/U2/Adele/UNKLE) and Jay Bone - drums (Carl Barat & The Jackals/Trampolene). All tracks were mixed by Mark Neary and mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

On the name Vona Vella “We were flicking through a flower encyclopedia and found 'Vona' experimented with lots of words and landed on Vona Vella. It's pronounced Vona like 'Donna' but with a V.
