Novelty Island w/Lazy girl & Kalima

QU A RR Y is proud to present an evening of surrealist analogue pop with Novelty Island; the creative vehicle of Liverpool songwriter Tom McConnell. Support from the wonderful Lazy Girl & Kalima.

Surrealist, analogue pop workshop, Novelty Island is the creative vehicle of Liverpool-based songwriter/producer, Tom McConnell. His childhood was spent playing, dissecting and composing songs between Liverpool and Newcastle Upon-Tyne. In 2018 he made the ultimate pilgrimage from his native north to study at Abbey Road Institute. Inspired by Paul McCartney, Boards of Canada, The Beach Boys and Vic Reeves, Novelty Island was born in the basement of Abbey Road Studios; in touching distance of the mythical
tape vaults.

Early 2020 saw Novelty Island debut their primary-colour psychedelia on London’s live-scene and the Welcome To Novelty Island... EP. However, the slight left-turn of a pandemic saw McConnell return to Liverpool and one imaginary-summer holiday EP later (Suddenly On Sea), inspiration grew as Tom was confined to his apartment-by-Mersey. He built papier-mâché sculptures, a never-ending Instagram canvas and dream-sequence music videos as he wrote and recorded his one-man band debut album,
How Are You Coping With This Century?

The 12-track ‘surreal northern nervous breakdown’ was released in 2021 on Think Like A Key to five-star reviews (Shindig / RnR) with support from BBC 6 Music, Amazing Radio and more. Now that Novelty Island is open again for visitors, the solo project has expanded into a live incarnation and ended 2021 supporting The Pale White on UK-wide adventures. They're currently setting off on self-originated routes having just completed their first UK headline run with festival appearances to follow in summer 2022...
