In 2009, a handful of London-based musicians traveled to Nairobi in Kenya to collaborate with local musicians there. Jesse Hackett (keys), Louis Hackett (bass), Sam Lewis (guitar) and Tom Skinner (drums) made up the London contingent, they met and collaborated with two Kenyan musicians: Joseph Nyamungu and Charles Owoko and Owiny Sigoma was born.
The band quickly came to the attention of legendary DJ Gilles Peterson who promptly signed them to his label, Brownswood imprint. Now in their 6th year, the band have toured extensively across the world playing memorable and unique live shows supported by critically acclaimed albums 'Owiny Sigoma Band' and 'Power Punch'.
2015 saw the release of their third album 'Nyanza' which saw the band travel to the Nyanza Province of Western Kenya - home of their two members Joseph Nyamungu and Charles Owoko - to explore the birthplace of Luo music.
