About Southpoint

Southpoint

In 2015, Josh Gunston and Jay McDougall (KXVU) joined forces to create Southpoint – a record label centred around their motivation for promoting local and lesser known talent and dedication to reviving Brighton’s fading bass and grime scene.

Tracks released through Southpoint so far have featured in DJ sets up and down the country, and receive frequent airplay on radio stations such as Rinse FM, Radar Radio, and BBC Radio 1Xtra. After being featured within UKF’s ‘New Blood: 10 Essential New Labels’, Southpoint were simultaneously described by Juno Download as one of “2016’s runaway label success stories”.

Southpoint have continuously created massive traction within the underground bass scene with a record label ‘takeover’ page featured on Juno Download. To add to this, they have hit the #1 spot seven times on three different charts (UK Garage, Bass, and Grime) and have been dubbed as one of the “top five best underground bass music record labels” by tastemakers Marcus Nasty, Dappa, and DJ Cartier. At a time where grime is becoming more and more saturated, Southpoint have ensured that their releases remain boundary pushing but also well-received, with numerous support from DJs including Slackk, Tiatsim, and Spooky.

The Southpoint roster is not limited to one genre and consequently have worked with a wide variety of artists ensuring their lasting success. Artists Bushbaby, Drax, Pavv, James Mannion, Tengu, Drone, Chemist RNS, Noble, Scullious and Moony, have over the last year become synonymous with Southpoint, with many using this as an opportunity to launch their music careers.

This summer, Southpoint launched a management division within the label, with their young maverick Bushbaby being their first artist to manage. In addition to this, Southpoint held their first event in July 2016 (which coincided with their first year anniversary) and were able to sell out the venue before midnight, displaying their increasing popularity within Brighton and beyond. Alongside their online presence, Southpoint have begun expanding their merchandise alongside popular streetwear brand Pear-Shaped Apparel – a local clothing brand and screen-printing service based in Brighton – and host a radio show every Thursday on Trickstar Radio, promoting new releases while also showcasing the DJ talent circulating within their collective.

Currently there are numerous forthcoming exciting projects in the pipeline, with 2017 already set to expand on a very successful 2016 – evidently Southpoint is not a label with a shelf-life.
