Afourika is a UK-based African dance platform dedicated to celebrating, preserving and elevating authentic African dance styles. Founded with the vision of creating accessible cultural spaces outside of London, Afourika brings international pioneers and respected educators directly to local communities, particularly Birmingham, to share their knowledge, heritage and lived experiences through movement.
More than a dance intensive, Afourika is a cultural experience. It connects dancers to the roots of African street and traditional styles, ensuring that the history, context and identity behind the movement are honoured. Through workshops, cultural discussions, screenings and collaborative events, Afourika builds spaces where community, education and artistic excellence meet.
The platform exists to address the gap in access to authentic African dance training across the UK. By hosting artists from countries such as South Africa, Ghana, Angola, Congo and beyond, Afourika creates meaningful international exchange while supporting fair pay and visibility for cultural pioneers.
At its core, Afourika is about community, representation and sustainability. It is self-built, community-driven and rooted in the belief that African dance deserves dedicated platforms that are intentional, safe and culturally respectful.
Afourika is not just an event β it is a growing movement committed to shaping the future of African dance in the UK and beyond.
