7.30pm: Panel Discussion – “RADICAL SPACE IS THE PLACE”
Chair: DAVE HASLAM (ex-Hacienda DJ, author of Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs and Music Venues)
DJ and writer Dave Haslam DJ’d over 450 times at the legendary Hacienda in Manchester during the late 80s and has since DJ’d worldwide. He made his debut at the Hacienda on May 1st 1986. Ian Brown, Tim Burgess and the Chemical Brothers all later credited his eclectic Thursday night sets as an inspiration. Since the early 1990s he has hosted a variety of successful club nights in Manchester, including ‘Yellow’ at the Boardwalk. He’s the author of ‘Manchester England’, a groundbreaking study of Manchester’s radical and musical history and ‘Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs & Music Venues’. Haslam was one of the original contributors to research carried out during the Projekt Schrumpfende Städte, founded in Berlin in 2002; the Projekt analysed urban decline and subsequent cultural reactions. His latest book, ‘Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs & Music Venues’ was published on August 13th 2015.
Panellists:
Andy Abbott (Musician/Artist - That Fucking Tank, Nope, M@BU, Threadfest, RECON)
Flick Henson (Disability Rights Campaigner)
Greg Thorpe (DJ - Drunk at Vogue and founder of A Queer Revue!)
Marcus Clarke (Writer/Producer/Promoter - Noisey, Destroy All Monsters, Partisan)
Sarah Statham (Musician/Label Boss - CHUNK, Esper Scout, Living Body, Bomb the Twist)
We discuss the subcultural roots of night life culture and what is happening to night-life in Manchester and the UK in the context of austerity, growing gentrification and dispossession. We ask what does it take for a space to be truly accessible? How can nightlife be truly radical? How can we resist commercialisation and reclaim progressive cultures of the night? What are safer spaces policies and do we/why do we need them?
9.30pm-2am: Residence: MEAT FREE / ARTHOUSE / ELEVATOR
Residence brings together residents from some of the best underground music nights in Manchester. This sessions brings you Lucy (MEAT FREE DJS); Moid, Jagger and the Bat (Arthouse); and Tom Gillespie and Cheap Date (Elevator) playing house and techno all night long.
