Stefan Murphy has been making music and putting out albums since 2006. With his first serious project The Mighty Stef he made 4 albums, touring the UK and America from his home base in Dublin, before moving to Berlin in 2015. In Germany he formed Count Vaseline, a predominantly studio based project, releasing two experimental albums in under two years. In 2016 Murphy moved to the United Sates, and signed to Saustex, a Texas based alternative rock n roll label in the spring of 2017. This was followed by an extensive 60 date US tour playing clubs nationwide, culminating in the release of ‘Tales From The Megaplex’ a critically acclaimed slice of DIY punk that was 13minutes long in its entirety.
Murphy is now [for the first time] touring under his own name, playing from his back catalogue and material from his forthcoming album. He will be performing with his band The Athletes of Soul, with a sound ranging from rootsy and spiritual rock n roll to full-on garage soul. The Athletes of Soul are a shifting collective of members, depending on location and inspiration. The concept emerged from his collaborations using this format in recent years- to date members of Black Angels, The Germs, Ariel Pink, The Pogues, Reigning Sound, Ash, Altered Images, One Dove and Fontaines DC, to name but a few, have at various times been Athletes of Soul. A man of considerable rock'n'roll pedigree, Stefan Murphy has shared bills and tours with Jonathan Richman, The Fall, Black Lips, King Khan, Happy Mondays, Television Personalities, Jeffrey Lewis, Dead Boys, Alice Cooper, The Boomtown Rats, Rancid, The Stooges, Queens Of The Stone Age, Arcade Fire, and the Libertines.
