Grimmfest’s 2019 seasonal screening pays off-kilter homage to tradition with a showing of Richard Donner’s cult classic, SCROOGED, which sees Dickens’ tale of miserliness and redemption relocated to 80s New York, and Ebeneezer Scrooge magnificently reimagined in the form of Bill Murray’s hard nosed TV exec Frank Cross. With a suitably scabrous and cynical screenplay by notorious SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and NATIONAL LAMPOON scribe Michael Donoghue and Dickens buff Mitch Glazer, who would later go on to adapt GREAT EXPECTATIONS for Alfonso Cuaron, and boasting an all-star cast of cult luminaries, including Robert Mitchum, Carol Kane, Karen Allen, Bobcat Goldthwaite, Michael J. Pollard, John Glover, and New York Dolls frontman David Johansen, it’s a brash and blackhearted take on a heartwarming tale.
