This time we're bringing you something a little bit different. 

At Screened/ MCR we aim to explore art, artists, and their influences. As well as this, we aim to explore the potential these have to influence society. In the first of Screened/ MCR's series of artist Q&As we're really happy to present the Banjee Cunt Experience with Jay Boogie, star of the NYC LGBT rap scene. We're hosting an intimate Q&A and performance at Texture, with proceeds going to Oxfam as part of Oxjam Manchester 2016. Some words of introduction from Jay Boogie himself...The Banjee Cunt ExperienceThe “Banjee Cunt” is the spirit that graces the streets of any ghetto across the world. The Banjee Cunt takes on any shape, form, gender, age and race. The Banjee Cunt is the living proof of ghetto fabulous as a mood. A natural born hustler always prepared for love & war.

My mother is a Banjee Cunt, I have a brother who is a Banjee Cunt. Banjee Cunts are all around me. Its not so much an aesthetic its more so a lifestyle that you’re born into and choose to embrace at some point of your life. Embracing the ghetto and the connotation of the term CUNT doesn’t sound too safe or endearing. However in life sometimes we have to trust the fact that everyone has different experiences in very different settings and very distinct definitions of happiness. The idea of freeing yourself of societies conceptions of you is beyond liberating and the way you relate to others realities should be the least of your worries. Being a Banjee cunt is to be care free.

I bring you this conversation in the form of a motivational and educational speech. As a Banjee Cunt myself I have decided to share the experiences that have lead me to the journey that I am currently on and how I’m living life in my own skin with a unapologetic sense of pride.

The Banjee Cunt is a force that is often misinterpreted as “dramatic” or “animated”. Instead I’d like to call it flavorful and explosive. Possessing the power to fill up a room with joy but bring down a whole house in terror. A force that is often misinterpreted as “dramatic” or “animated”.
