Trash TV Trance is the first of two programmes performed by Millennial Percussion and its friends from Ensemble Contrechamps. The music in the first programme challenges the listener by incorporating trashy sounds and everyday objects. Thanks, however, to the composers’ fearless and enlightened orchestration, these same elements come together to facilitate a refined musical experience.
The Ligeti uses whistles, ocarinas and a multiplicity of gongs and percussion to accompany his native folk songs. In Drama, Guo Wenjing channels the high energy of chinese opera to create an impressive trio for clash cymbals. The Romitelli breaks boundaries with references to trashy TV aesthetics in his electric guitar solo. The guitarist, Simon Aeschimann, then leads an improvisation though iPad communication, and local composer Fumiko Miyachi creates a new work featuring all of the above.
A high-energy evening of contrasts bringing together Trash, TV and Trance. Don’t miss the sequel, String Motion Sensor, on 19 February 2019.*
