GO!Social: Lunar New Year 2020

International@CampusLife, kindly sponsored by International Development Office, College of Arts and Humanities, College of Engineering, School of Management, The Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law  and College of Science, invites you to join us for our exciting GO!Social events to celebrate Lunar New Year 2020- the Chinese Year of the Rat!

The Lunar New Year is observed by many different countries and cultures around the world. At Swansea, we have a large student population from these countries and we hope to bring them all together to enjoy a cultural festival and a meal to celebrate! Even if you don't celebrate Lunar New Year, these events are open to all -  why not come and experience a unique and fun cultural tradition?

This year we are welcoming you to choose a FREE ticket to ONE of the following two events:

1. GO!Trip to Birmingham for Chinese New Year, Sunday 26th January

Each year, Birmingham Chinese New Year Committee organise a huge celebration in the heart of the city which is usually attended by around 30,000 people! Complete with live stage shows, market stalls, Far-Eastern Food Festival and the famous lion dance, this is the place to be to welcome the Year of the Rat.

Details: Departing Fulton House at 7.15 am with a pick up at Bay Campus (Archway – bus stops inside the campus) at 7.30 am.  The journey will take approximately 3.5 hours and we hope to arrive in Birmingham by 11am. The coach will leave Birmingham at 4pm. The driver will confirm the departure meeting point on the day.

2. GO!Eat at The New Slow Boat Cantonese Restaurant at 6pm on Tuesday 28th January

Like any celebration, food is a huge part of the fun! As part of our Lunar New Year celebrations, we are returning to the ever-popular New Slow Boat for more delicious and authentic Cantonese cuisine. We will be enjoying a set meal which includes meat, vegetarian and vegan options as well as traditional green tea. There's always plenty of food and a great atmosphere to share with new friends and old.

NB: We have had a couple of queries about the event in light of the coronavirus activity in China. Please check your student email for University advice and information around that. We draw particular attention to the section for recent travellers and personal responsibilities for them. In regards to running events, we have sought expert advice from Public Health Wales (the national public health agency in Wales) and have been advised by them that cancellation of events is not necessary.

Ticket Information

Please note that these events are FREE. However, you must be a Swansea University student (with Student ID number), you can only have one ticket per person and you can only choose ONE event to attend - this ensures fairness so that as many SU students as possible can enjoy the festivities! We would kindly ask that you select the ticket for the event you are most interested in only.  Those students who choose both options or attempt to gain more than one ticket per activity will be removed.
