Huichol Cosmovision and Earth keeping
The Wixaritari or Huichol people are one of the few people that have remained pure since the Spanish conquest. They have survive with great vitality thanks to the rough topography of their territories, to decentralize political organization and their ability to adapt to the historical surroundings reflected by the active participation in the history of West Mexico. Nevertheless, the main strengh of their cultural reproduction is the collective resolve to keep their ancestral traditions. They are not only a pure nation down to their roots but also in their spirituality and their cosmogony.
The Wixaritari (wi’ ra’tari) are an indigenous ethnic group of central Mexico, living in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the States of Nayarit, Jalisco. Zacatecas and Durango. There are around 25,000 Wixaritari living in the 11 municipios in a range of 700,000 hectares and possibly other 20,000 living in other cities and towns. Once a year, they journey back to Wirikuta to gather their most sacred plant the Hikuri. is one of the oldest pilgrimages dating back more than 5,000 years.
On evening of 23rd May we invite you to an evening of knowledge sharing about the cosmology of the Huichol people, and their messages and visions about the current planetary situation, as Earthkeepers to us. The delegation is led by Marakame Don Emilio and a also includes a Musician and a translator who will help to articulate the wisdom of the tribe.
Marakame Don Emilio Lopez (Niuwe Osaya Wixarika name) was born in the Wixarika community of Tatheikie in the Mountains of North Mexico, he is 68 years old. Since a very young age he started to walk with the ceremonial center. With 18 years old he became Marakame. Descendant of a very specail linage, he is the healer of many Marakame; a Medicine Man dedicated to preserve his tradition and culture alive, guiding diverse
rituals, prayer chants he is a guardian of the earth. He has an important charge in the main ceremonial ceremonial center 'Tunuwame' in the community of Tateikie.
The evening will begin at 630 with dinner included and finish at 10pm. Energy contribution is £23 including Mexican style dinner. We have 5 Early bird tickets available for £18 (including dinner).
