After the annual Christmas break, Sunday Joint at The Hifi Club returns for it's 23rd continuous year of promoting the best funk, soul, jazz, reggae and global beats around, both homegrown and from outside the city. Now a monthly session, it launches on it's new regular night of last Sunday of the month on 29th January with one of the city's rising stars of hip-hop/soul, PHENICIA, making their debut at the venue as a headliner and featuring an all-star live band.
PHENICIA is vocalist/MC and songwriter who combines melodic vocals and MC skills to create a unique sound. As Emily Pilbeam of BBC Introducing West Yorkshire says "PHENICIA is an artist you just can’t pigeonhole”.
PHENICIA’s musical influence was born in the Church, like many black artists, where they picked up various musical instruments including drums, keys, guitar and realised the power of the voice. Today, inspiration comes from artists such as Fliptrix, Little Simz, Anderson .Paak, Greentea Peng and all things soul. Not forgetting their roots in Gospel music, PHENICIA is still an avid listener of the genre that made them musically who they are today. Some of their favourite Gospel artists include, Fred Hammond, Israel Houghton, The Clark Sisters and Kirk Franklin
After their first self release “Wayback” in 2021, PHENICIA has been growing as an artist within the Leeds scene, taking the stage at numerous events including Live At Leeds In The City 2022 and supporting bands such as South African music stars BCUC, Leeds locals State Of Satta and global jazz fusion band Plantfood. With the support of artist mentoring scheme Launchpad Music and becoming one of their supported artists of 2022, they have released two singles “Free Birds” and “They Don't Know” which featured on the BBC 1Xtra playlists in December 2022.
PHENICIA is no stranger to The Hifi Club's Sunday Joint sessions having already been a guest MC on sets by Naali Collective, Yusuf Yellow and the house band. Tonight, they return for the first time as headliner and with their own all-star band backing them up. Featuring drummer Luca Ferrara (Portraits), bassist Woody Hayden (Plantfood), jazz trumpet star Olivia Cuttill (Mangorata), Brazilian sax king Gustavo Andrade (Elusive Dip), keys player Joe Frost (Yusuf Yellow & The Energy Collective), and Leeds' very own new queen of funky rock/alt-soul Mica Sefia on backing vocals. All familiar faces at Sunday Joint in the last 18 months. A great artist to kick off the new year and new season of Sunday Joint at The Hifi Club!
Support comes from the next generation of rising stars at Leeds Conservatoire, funk/soul meets alt-rock band Rushbonds. Already writing original music and performing around the city, they made their Sunday Joint debut to a great response back in October 2022. It's great to have them back for this opening Sunday Joint show of 2023. Get down early to catch their set as they are definitely "ones to watch for" in the Leeds music scene in 2023!
Doors 7pm. Live music from 7.45pm. Great drinks promos. Amazing live music.
