The HiFi Club presents... The Sunday Joint & Brazilian Beats Leeds - Carnival Party 2023 w/ the Gustavo Andrade Samba Jazz Allstars, Leeds Samba & DJ Lubi

Leeds jazz/Latin music legend and Sunday Joint booker/resident DJ Lubi (Jovanovic) loves Brazilian music. He has done for the four decades he's been in the music business. As well as promoting and DJing Brazilian music since 1982, over the years he's often featured Brazilian carnival parties in Leeds to coincide with carnival in Rio and Salvador de Bahia. This year, he brings the samba vibes to The Hifi Club for a Sunday Joint Brazilian Carnival Special on the final weekend of carnival. Headlining will be a special Leeds allstar 11 piece samba jazz big-band led by Brazilian saxophonist Gustavo Andrade from Sao Paulo who'll be playing carnival music from Rio, Salvador and Pernambuco. Support comes from samba percussion mestre Gez Heb and his Leeds Samba Bateria. Lubi will be warming up with great samba, pagode and axé.

Tenor saxophonist Gustavo Andrade moved from sunny Sao Paulo, Brazil to rainy Leeds a few years ago to study jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. He quickly threw himself into the vibrant jazz scene at the music university and soon found himself in some of the best jazz/soul/hip-hop ensembles there including 2/22, Elusive Dip, Yusuf Yellow & The Energy Collective and Portraits (all who have played Sunday Joint in 2021/2022). In summer 2021, he met DJ Lubi and said he hadn't played any Brazilian music in the two years he'd been at Leeds Conservatoire, only jazz. Lubi immediately put that right by telling him to form his own Brazilian jazz quintet and he'd book them for a gig. The Gustavo Andrade Quintet was born and started gigging for Lubi at The Hifi Club and Brudenell Social Club playing classic bossa and samba jazz. For Brazil Carnival 2023, Gustavo has expanded the quintet to a mighty samba jazz big band of 11 musicians/singers and they'll be playing carnival music from Rio (samba) and Salvador (axé) as well as some frevo from Pernambuco. The line-up is an allstar cast of some of the best jazz/global beats musicians in Leeds today and many who play at Sunday Joint regularly..

Making up the band are: Gustavo Andrade (Elusive Dip) - tenor sax, Fee Buckton (Heritage) - trumpet, Victor Estevez (Rumberos de Palo) - trumpet, bass guitar, Eddie Bowes (Awen Ensemble) - drums, JJ Petrie (Plantfood) - percussion, Joe Redgrave (Tempo Feliz) - percussion, Theo Black (Spacey Basement Cult) - guitar, Ruben Maric (Elusive Dip) - keys. On vocals, Portuguese singers Raquel Alvaro (Catimba) and Sueli Gil.

Leeds Samba are the city’s much respected and loved Brazilian percussion samba school. Led by samba percussion mestre (master) Gez Heb and Brazilian samba dancer/percussionist Thali Bento, this samba drum ensemble is one of the top samba schools in the north of England. They've performed across the UK and in Leeds, at the annual Vamos Leeds Festival in Millennium Square as well as DJ Lubi's Brazilian events at The Wardrobe and Belgrave Music Hall. Whether rocking Rio style samba do carnaval and batucada beats or the hypnotic Afrocentric axé grooves of Salvador de Bahia, they always bring the authentic sounds of Brazilian carnival to the heart of Leeds. Make sure you get down for their explosive set at 7.45pm.
