New Roots presents Gabriel Moreno & the Quivering Poets

With support from Mock Deer / Martha Hill

Gabriel Moreno is a Gibraltarian poet and singer songwriter who has been performing for the past 20 years in Gibrlatar, Peru, Italy, Spain, USA and the United Kingdom. His folk songs are both poetic and political, mining the same rich seams as Leonard Cohen, Fabrizio D’Andre and Georges Brassens. In 2015 he joined up with The Quivering Poets, Basha Bartz, Pablo Campos, Pablo Yupton, Adam Beattie and Sergio Contreras to create a wonderful new alt-folk band that push his poetry and song to new musical territories. Gabriel also hosts the legendary folk institution ‘The Lantern Society’, running for the last ten years at London’s Betsey Trotwood venue.

Mock Deer (Ricky Damiani) is a singer and songwriter based in London. A self-taught musician with a unique playing and writing style, he has spent the majority of his life in the North of England and has re-immersed himself in the capital’s Alt-folk scene over recent years, playing shows for many of the best local promoters as well as touring both in the UK and in Europe. As well as writing original music for theatre and television he has released two EPs, ‘Cold and Bright’ and more recently ‘How We Used to Live’ released in July 2015. His renewed involvement in the live music scene has seen him play shows alongside The Burning Hell (Can), The Migrant (DK), Sam Brookes (UK) and Kristin McClement (UK) as well as UK festival appearances at Festival N6, Wilderness Festival, Ramsbottom Festival, The End & Uncivilization Festival.

Fusing soul, edgy indie, acoustic folk, and contemporary pop to stunning effect, Marha Hill and her band succeed in bringing four disparate strands into one perfect, coherent whole. It's a sound that feels as though it's been around forever, and at the same time utterly contemporary and cutting-edge. Hill's superb, stop-you-in-your-tracks jazz-blues voice and unshirkingly honest, kitchen sink lyrical style summons the ghost of Amy Winehouse, backed up by superbly original, starkly minimal arrangement from her band.
