That's right Bristol, we're taking it back to the 1960's when girl groups and soul music reigned supreme through our radio's in none other than the Motor City itself, Detroit!
Nicknamed the 'Motor City' due to its phenomenal and fresh automotive industry, Detroit's nickname translated over to all facets of the city, this including it's pioneering music scene. Motown finding the origins of it's name from the Motor City itself, this game-changing record label was born and bred in Detroit.
Created as Tamla Motown, the label produced lesser known, rawer sounding and subsequently rarer records that often didn't make it past the demo stage. Eventually shelved in warehouses across the Northern state city, these records somehow found their way out of obscurity and across the atlantic to the North of England. These highly rare records accompanied with stomping beats created the first club culture; this was known as Northern Soul.
As a touring club night involved in a deep-rooted love affair with both dancing and vinyl records, we at Itchy Feet want to celebrate the city which created one of the world's most defining soul labels and the musical originator of the UK's first nightclub culture. That's why Itchy Feet want's you to enter Detroit, Motor City!
Fashion from the Motor City translated to sequins, suits and sass in pure sixties glamour. We're hoping that visions of Diana Ross and Jackie Wilson can be replicated on the dancefloor in true girl group and soul singer style.
From crate digging in warehouses to getting down at the car wash, we hope to emulate all that was golden about the home of Motown itself. We are back at the venue that never stops, Thekla, on Wednesday the 8th of February from 11pm just in time to be your pre-Valentines day romance, and drive you crazy for all things soul and sixties!
