Registered volunteers to meet at the Discovery SVS, Singleton Campus. Contact b.n.hyde@swansea.ac.uk to make travel arrangements from Bay Campus.
NB: This volunteer role is restricted to Discovery SVS members, Students and Staff of Swansea University
Important things to remember when you are volunteering:
1. Every project has a volunteer who leads it, they are usually students, we call them the Project Coordinator or PC, they should be your first point of contact
2. Make sure your PC has registered you as present so that your hours are recorded
3. Get your temporary ID card and carry it with you when you are volunteering
4. Listen to any instructions given by the PC or workers
5. There will be a risk assessment for the activity you are on, your PC will give you any safety instructions, you must follow them. If you notice anything you think might be unsafe for you or anyone else tell someone or do something about it!
6. Discovery’s projects all aim to improve lives this means that we are usually working with people, although sometimes we focus on improving the environment.
7. A really important part of your role on this activity will be to talk to people and get to know them, sometime this is the main reason we are there. This includes other volunteers, it can feel daunting but will be worth it. If you want some help with this buddy up with another volunteer and start conversations together, let you PC know if you feel really worried about this.
8. You are not allowed to share your contact details with anyone of the people we support, this includes social media follows, friends or likes.
9. If you want to take photos or videos ask your PC if we have permission first, also ask anyone who might be in your photo or video if it is ok with them.
10. If you notice anything worrying or someone tells you something that worries you, you need to pass it on to your Project Coordinator or a member of Discovery staff. The rules for this are: Always show that you believe what you have been told, record it as soon as possible (try to write down exactly what you saw or heard that worried you) and then report it to your PC or a worker. Your PC will have a cause of concern form, use this if you can but the important thing is that you pass the information on.
11. If you are uncertain about anything ask
