Who should pay for making our air cleaner & our climate safer?
Why do fossil fuels continue to provide most of our energy? The reason is simple. Fossil fuels are the cheapest energy. This is in part due to their marvellous energy density and the infrastructure that has grown up around them.
But there is another reason: We do not take into account their true cost to society. For example, the effects of air pollution on human health are borne by us, the public. Damages from climate change are also building inexorably and they will be borne especially by our children and grandchildren.
A keynote speaker from the Citizens' Climate Lobby UK, Ed Atkinson, will give a presentation on why putting a price on carbon that reflects its true costs to society is an essential policy proposal and how that could be implemented alongside the other measures necessary to effect the transition to a zero carbon society. He will answer any questions people have about the proposal.
There will also be a guest speaker from Friends of the Earth explaining the link between air pollution, climate change, and public health.
