From the Vedas to the Bhagavad-Gita: A Study of Sanatana Dharma

ORIENTATION TO HINDU STUDIES COURSE

This Hindu Studies course is an introduction to the key themes and concepts of Hinduism, also known as Sanatana Dharma. It covers the fundamental ideas of Hinduism, including important Sanskrit terms and the central beliefs that form the basis of Hindu cosmology, practice, and culture. The course will examine selected texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Itihaasa, Bhagavad-Gita, and Puranas to gain a deeper understanding of these core concepts. Sanatana Dharma is the ancient and timeless system of Hindu philosophy and belief and forms the foundation of the Hindu Studies curriculum at the Hindu University of America.

The course also explores the challenges that arise when Hindu and Western thought intersect, comparing the Hindu focus on duties and responsibilities for a sustainable life with the Western focus on rights, competition, and survival of the fittest. The class will distinguish between the discourse of knowledge and the discourse of power and examine the impact of colonial discourse on post-colonial Hindu experience.

By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive overview of the Hindu Studies curriculum offered by the Hindu University of America, including the context and paradigm that informs its design. They will also understand the importance of Hindu studies today and the urgency of intellectual decolonization.

Class Structure: This course includes a minimum of 1.5 hours of in-person class time with a faculty member each week. The classes promote discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection and are structured in a way that encourages students to share their thoughts and insights. The content of each class will be concluded within 90 minutes, but the discussion can continue for an additional 30 minutes. Students will be required to submit one short essay that reflects on what they have learned and how it has impacted them.

Programs: This Hindu Studies course is part of the Hindu Studies Foundation program and is available as part of the Certificate Program in Hindu Studies (C.P.H.S), Community Education Program (C.E.P), Doctor of Philosophy in Hindu Studies, and Master of Arts in Hindu Studies (M.A.H.S) at the Hindu University of America.
