Over the last few years, original Chicago style acid house – raw, psychedelic, and uncompromising – has once again been tearing up dancefloors. While the style never died, the recent boom is thanks to a whole new generation of DJs and producers falling in love with the distinctive sounds of Roland’s iconic TB-303 bass synthesizer. At the forefront of this ‘new acid’ movement has been London’s I Love Acid crew, whose combination of killer parties and limited edition vinyl releases has been taking the capital by storm. Their success has been built on joining the dots between legends of the scene – Jerome Hill, Luke Vibert, Hardfloor and DJ Pierre have all contributed tracks to the label – and a new generation of 303-loving producers.
On December 2, Parallel Dimensions is bringing the I Love Acid crew to Bristol for a very special party aboard the city’s own pitch-black rave vessel, the Thekla. For the occasion, we have brought together an impressive line-up of talents.
At the top of the bill is Ed DMX, who has been releasing bombastic dancefloor fare under the DMX Krew guise – and many others – since the mid 1990s. Inspired by a mixtureof acid house, electro, techno, breakbeat hardcore and Rephlex style “Brain-dance”, Ed is renowned for being a party-starting DJ with a penchant for heavy rhythms and intense acid lines.
It wouldn’t be an I Love Acid party without co-founders Posthuman, and they have something very special in store for this Bristol appearance. With assistance from vocalist, DJ and producer Josh Caffe, they’ll be delivering an improvised acid onslaught that sits somewhere between a DJ set and a live performance. Expect hardware abuse, Robert Owens style vocals, and lashings of killer drum machine rhythms.
The main room line-up is completed by two local talents: I Love Acid regular Placid –a man with arguably the finest acid house and classic techno record collection in theUK – and Sofaboy, AKA West Country veteran Dave Cridge. Both will be dropping gems from their ludicrously good record collections.
Upstairs in Thekla’s second room you’ll find Semi Peppered, a Bristol-based record label, radio show and DJ collective dedicated to off-kilter house, techno and electronica explorations. They’ve got a rising reputation, and are sure to offer a deeper and groovier alternative to the full-throttle acid madness going on in the hold.
