SOFTWOOD LUMBER TRADE DISPUTE:

HOW DID WE GET HERE,

AND HOW DO WE GET OFF THIS RIDE?

A dispute between Canada and the US over softwood lumber is brewing again.  Prime Minister Trudeau and President Barrack Obama have directed their respective negotiators to push towards an agreement, but there is little reason for optimism.  Rather ominously, the Canadian Trade Minister has said that Canada would rather miss the deadline than sign a bad deal. Any hope for the conclusion of an agreement before the expiration of the October standstill deadline has been squelched.

In this special AMCHAM – Pacific event, a panel of experts will discuss:

1.    The history of the softwood lumber dispute.

2.    The central issues between Canadian and US industries.

3.    The current status of the standstill agreement.

4.    What happens if the standstill agreement lapses.

5.    What is the likely impact on Canadian and US corporations.

6.    What steps companies can take to address this issue.

Our panelists:

Joel Junker, an international trade attorney in Seattle, WA with over 35 years government and private experience: http://www.tradelawcounsel.com/junker/

Bill Perry, an international trade lawyer in Seattle, WA focusing on the area of trade policy: http://harrismoure.com/our-team/william-perry/

Moderated by Dan Kiselbach, Partner Deloitte Tax Law.
