Imagine Kate Bush running away to join the circus with System of a Down. Now add some shades of American Horror Story, with an unsettling undercurrent à la The Brothers Grimm. You are now some way towards describing Sir Curse, a 6-piece theatrical dance rock band from Leeds.
Formed during their university days by keyboardist Ellen Davis and vocalist Lyndsay Dale, Sir Curse bring you crazed live shows that combine campfire horror storytelling, freak-show theatricality, and full-throttle music. Joining Dale and Davis are Bill O’Dwyer on guitar, Eric Lock on Bass, Joe Martin on trumpets, and Aidan Downes on drums.
Sir Curse released their debut single Tarot in 2019, reviewed by Ben Jekyll of Dancing with the Dead as “Proper jovial bouncy energetic awesomeness. Bizarre piano shenanigans.” Following up in February 2020 with Graphite, the band played a sold-out release show at The Lending Room, Leeds, receiving praise for their live show from Tom Robinson of BBC Radio 6: “Totally barnstorming show by the extraordinary Sir Curse … now that's an object lesson in how to end a set!”
Hailed as “their most true-to-live recording yet,” October 2020 saw the release of the horror-themed Rabbit Holes, recorded remotely by the band during lockdown, and produced by Kane Whitelam. The band released a live video for Halloween 2021 in the form of the drum-and-bass inspired Coraline, which received over 12,000 hits on YouTube within days of release.
Sir Curse’s newest single Glad I Woke Up is the group’s most personal song yet, drawing on bitter experiences with heartbreak, and it is set to be released 1st April 2022, and is again produced by Kane Whitelam.
