Bassekou Kouyate is one of the true masters of the ngoni, an
ancient traditional lute native to West Africa. Having toured with Ali
Farka Touré, leaving a lasting impression on the audience as the band’s
solo ngoni player, and collaborating with other Malian musicians
including Toumani Diabate (kora) and the late Keletigui Diabate
(balafon), Bassekou is regarded as one of the 21st centuries most
relevant musical artists.
Performing as part of the Africa Express events, where he appeared on stage together with Sir Paul
McCartney and John Paul Jones, Bassekou also has four hugely successful
albums under his belt - including a Grammy nomination for I speak fula
and 2013’s Jama ko being classed as ‘Album of the Year’ in the World
Music Charts, Les Inrockuptible, Mojo, Uncut, alongside many others.
