Playing in Brighton for the first time, JAWARI is a multi-disciplinary collective that navigates a diverse musical landscape, citing inspiration from a variety of genres. Led by sitarist Tommy Khosla - who has gained significant recognition earning features in BBC Asian Network and playing Glastonbury and Royal Albert Hall - other core members include Latin Grammy awardee and Aterciopelados (Europe) member Gregorio Merchán on percussion, Taylor Frost on guitar, Billie Sophoclides on saxophone and Nashville's first Youth Poet Laureate Lagnajita Mukhopadhyay on poetry and bass. Drawing on the eclectic musical and interdisciplinary backgrounds of its members and collaborators with an emphasis on the Indian Classical tradition, JAWARI is cultivating a distinct identity within the global jazz scene. Following sell-out gigs in London as well as playing the Paris Olympics and SXSW (US & UK), their debut album, ROAD RASA - supported by Help Musicians and the British Arts Council—has also received airplay on BBC 6 and Worldwide FM, promising a mainstay in the UK scene.
A dynamic saxophonist with a voice like melting butter, Sambambo returns to the Folklore Rooms to support Jawari on their Road Rasa UK tour, a week before she releases her first ever mini-album.
Sambambo is a sax-player and singer-songwriter whose bouncy joy for music is infectious. Threading through her performance is a deep love for jazz and Black American Music, and she’s not afraid to be vulnerable on and offstage, talking openly about living with bipolar disorder, love in the queer community and existing alongside grief.
At the end of August, she released her latest single, ‘In The Trees’, and played a sold-out show at Green Note in Camden. This summer, she also played Greenbelt Festival mainstage with her band and at Green Man Festival, as well as at Brighton and Southwark Prides, Piano Smithfield in London and the Folklore Rooms in Brighton. In the past she’s played at the Royal Albert Hall’s Great Exhibition Road Festival, Gottwood Festival, Ronnie Scott’s, the Southbank Centre, and is a busy session saxophonist up and down the UK.
At the end of October, she’ll release her first ever collection of songs about grief.
