Cannonball Statman/The Tonsils/DM Rice/ANT

The Folklore Rooms is Brighton's premiere, intimate folk venue in the heart of the City. Brighton's best spot to discover the best independent artists. This Halloween, come and check out these internationally touring and local acts:

CANNONBALL STATMAN
NYC native Cannonball Statman has penned over 100 songs, released over a dozen albums, and toured extensively in North America, Europe, and Asia, sharing stages with like-minded artists such as Jeffrey Lewis, Days N' Daze, Crazy & the Brains, and Sunflower Bean. He sets soulful, often surreal lyrics that Radio Javali calls "great American storytelling" to sounds daMusic describes as "quite fun".

"...Statman charmed the entire greenhouse. Every now and then he jumped off the stage to make a U-turn after a few chords. The New Yorker also took over the Palmarium with his chatter in between, announcing his songs about the things of life. That's how we learned that Grow is about hair, and Tiger is about a tiger. But he also brought a song that is "a love song and a murder song at the same time" (I'm Gonna Explode), or a song about longevity that becomes exuberant. It was quite fun to enjoy the man's songs and honesty." (daMusic)

"For starters, Cannonball Statman (who made it in our latest Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists) has got the look - with an over-sized afro of curly red hair and a commanding stage presence. The music delivers the acoustic punk attack of antifolk by way of black metal; it’s not unusual for a typical 5-minute song to run the BPM gamut and contain several distinct sections. Lyrically, he embraces smorgasbord surrealism, but the songs always resonate and the audience is never distanced from the youthful anxieties and aspiration that fuel his fervor." (The Deli Magazine)

THE TONSILS (Belgium-based)
Tonsils is a lot of unruly musicians trying their very best to distill a perfect pop song out of life’s daily chaos. The quintet surrounding songwriter Tom Vienne load up their jenga-pop with enough ideas and angles to make even the sturdiest of towers rock back and forth.

On their latest construction ‘Nightmares’, Tonsils comments our strange present-day times: mouth breathing world leaders get debunked, A.I. solves most world problems and the big question concerning life after death finally gets an adequate response. Tonsils gets the job done in 12 tongue-in-cheek catchy odd pop songs.

DM Rice
D.M. Rice is a multi-disciplinary artist from Texas, based in Brighton. They are the founder of the diy-label, Holy Island Records, through which they have released four albums worth of material in 2023 alone. With influences ranging from Leonard Cohen and Jeff Mangum to Kimya Dawson and Pat the Bunny, they offer an introspective yet energetic live show not to be missed. Their latest release is "Pilgrim Songs," an acoustic album about living a nomadic life throughout the UK.

ANT
Prolific, mysterious, and full of surprises, local artist ANT rounds out this eclectic bill. Last but not least, their music conjures the peak-performances of the likes of Dan Deacon and Animal collective. Their song, "Old Stein" perfectly captures the neurotic and psychonautic experience of living in Brighton. Here's one for the locals, a burgeoning talent that is bound for the upper stratospheres.
