This New Writing Season is a first for Rose Bruford. It comprises of eight plays developed over six months, written, directed, and performed by third year students from the Acting and Actor Musicianship programmes. Beginning with Writer’s Lab workshops last November under the guidance of BAFTA award winning writer Janys Chambers, the entire year were introduced to the creative energies and disciplines of playwriting, leading to a final list of eight short plays for this season.
This collection of plays will plunge audiences into Scottish resistance to Land Enclosures in 19th Century Scotland (Cianalas); a tense Western set on the A382 in Dartmoor (Bovey to Moreton), pain and courage in Leeds’ Red Light District (Dread Light); 12 year-old eco warriors take on ruthless developers in Snail; a teenage girl tries to survive her parents’ failures and the consequences of her own recklessness in Solo; there are three painfully hilarious comedies: one a wedding reception (Cockail Sausage), another set in a restaurant kitchen (Crab à la Prawn); and in A Girl’s Guide to a Wake a solemn funeral reception is double booked with a class in emergency first aid in a Village Hall.
