Surrey Global Summit

Surrey Economics and Finance Society are pleased to announce the first ever Surrey Global Summit (SGS)! Surrey Global Summit is a three-day event incorporating prominent and world-renowned speakers who are leaders in Economics and in Finance.

FIRST DAY | Monday 14th MarchRobert Shiller | 7pm - 9pm

Our opening speaker will be the American Nobel Laureate, Economist, Academic, and best-selling author Robert Shiller. Robert Shiller is ranked among the 100 most influential economists in the world. Additionally, Robert jointly received the 2013 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Eugene Fama and Lars Peter Hansen “for their empirical analysis of asset prices”.Robert Shiller will be giving us a talk based on his latest book ‘Phishing for Phools’ which is also written by George Akerlof. Phishing for Phools therefore strikes a radically new direction in economics, based on the intuitive idea that markets both give and take away. Akerlof and Shiller bring this idea to life through dozens of stories that show how phishing affects everyone, in almost every walk of life.

SECOND DAY | Tuesday 15th March | David Smith and Joseph Mauro | 6pm - 8pm

On Tuesday we are pleased to welcome a panel discussion on the UK economy and its current state.

On the panel we have Joseph Mauro and David Smith:

Joseph Mauro has been with Goldman Sachs since 2000. Having started his Goldman Sachs career in emerging markets he is currently the Partner Managing Director in European Sales. Joseph also holds an MBA in International Finance from UCLA.

David Smith is graduate of Oxford University and has served as the Economics Editor of The Sunday Times since 1989. Aside from his work in journalism he has served as a policy advisor to the UK government and currently runs his own Economics blog (see economicsUK.com). David is also an accomplished author with his latest publication “Something Will Turn Up” focusing on the UK economy (past, present and future).

THIRD DAY | Wednesday 16th March | Kevin Lansing | 6pm - 8pm

Kevin Lansing is a leading economic advisor at the San Francisco Central Bank (SFCB) and has been with the Central Bank since 1998. Holding a PhD in Economics from UCLA and a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Kevin’s research primarily focuses on Macroeconomics. Aside from his work with SFCB Kevin has previously served as a visiting Senior Economist at the Monetary Policy Research Department of the Central Bank of Norway. Kevin has published articles in a wide range of journals and has also taught Economics at Pepperdine University and the US Naval Postgraduate School.

His speech will be centered around his research paper on “Top Incomes, Rising Inequality and Welfare” and is essential for anyone with an interest in Economics, politics and the current global welfare condition.
