THE VASELINES

Yes, The Vaselines! They formed in Glasgow in 1986, made a couple of EPs prior to their debut album Dum-Dum, broke up in ’89, became famous via an extraordinary association with Nirvana, briefly reformed, went their separate ways again, before releasing Sex With an X in 2010 and V for Vaselines in 2014.

At its core, The Vaselines are a duo - songwriters Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee. McKee had formerly been a member of Pretty Flowers with west coast indie royalty Duglas T. Stewart, Norman Blake, Janice McBride and Sean Dickson. She also founded the band Suckle and released her first solo album, Sunny Moon, in 2006. Kelly had formerly played in The Famous Monsters and went on to form Captain America (later renamed Eugenius after legal threats from Marvel Comics).

Kurt Cobain once described Kelly and McKee as his "favorite songwriters in the whole world", with Kelly even joining Nirvana on stage at the 1991 Reading Festival for a performance of Molly's Lips. With their songs Son of a Gun and Molly's Lips covered on Nirvana's album Incesticide, and Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam also covered in the much-celebrated MTV Unplugged in New York performance, the band gained a new global audience.

CUDDLY SHARK

Cuddly Shark encapsulate a purist “plug in and play” ethos with a touch of ice cold rock’n’roll. Idiosyncratic lyricism and odd anti-melodies combined with a foot down pedalto-the-metal performance.

Forming in early 2006 the band consists of two boys and one girl, Colin Reid on guitar and vocals, Jason Sinclair on drums and vocals and Ruth Forsyth on bass guitar. Born and bred in the bonnie highlands of Scotland the band found themselves magnetically drawn to the rain-soaked musical hotspot that is Glasgow to hone their sound.

Things seemed to twitter along very quickly and Cuddly Shark found themselves with a bunch of songs with winning names like ‘The Punisher of IV30’, referring to the Elgin postcode where the band members grew up and if pushed could tell you a horror story or two! In 2009 they dropped jaws with the release of their debut eponymous album. The record was rightly praised in the national press and the singles received regular rotation on BBC Radio 1, BBC Scotland and BBC 6Music with the band getting down and dirty around their native Scotland and south of the border. The band re-emerged in October 2012 with the release of the Body Mass Index EP, a forerunner to their second album, The Road To Ugly which was met with critical acclaim upon its release in January 2013. Reaffirmed that Cuddly Shark will never have an ounce of pretentious hip- fat on them.

Brimming with punk attitude and spilling over with melodic brilliance Cuddly Shark’s live shows have seen comparisons made to Husker Du, Minor Threat, Ween, Fugazi and Weezer. Yet Cuddly Shark are unmistakably their own entity, a blistering romp of rock’n’roll carnage firing as loud as they can from a post-rock cannon.

If that’s not enough, last summer saw the release of their new self-titled album, accompanied by singles La Barba, (Single of the week, The Afternoon Show, BBC Radio Scotland and a firm favourite on the Tom Robinson Show, BBC 6Music) and Hobo Rock (radio debut on Steve Lamacq, BBC 6Music).
