'basics' is a series of shows which host a mixture of stripped-back music & poetry in intimate venues around Brighton. The diverse and carefully curated line-ups have generated a growing reputation around the city and led to every show being sold-out in advance. They've also appeared three times in the Folklore Room's ‘staff's picks of 2024’ and received outstanding reviews from Rapture Magazine, Brighton Source & WeLoveBrighton. On the 22nd of May, basics will return to Brighton's cosiest music venue, Folklore Rooms, for another display of incredible talent across an array of diverse genres & art-forms.
The brilliant Bea Maher, just back from supporting the Rizzle Kicks on tour, will be headlining the show alongside her incredible band. They’ll close the evening by blending soulful melodies, funky rhythms, jazzy undertones, and heartfelt storytelling.
Joining her will be the phenomenal violinist, Theo Warrington. Fusing orchestral genres with elements of pop & folk, he & his guitarist have been immersing audiences in their truly unique sound for the last couple of years.
As well as a diverse blend of musical genres, they’ll also be poetry to enjoy. This time from the hilarious, honest & often heart-wrenching poet, Georgie Jones. Her distinctive style of poetry has achieved national acclaim & many of her performances have ended up going viral on social media. A former Roundhouse Resident Artist and poetry slam finalist, her work has been praised by Malorie Blackman, Adrian Lester and Pitbull.
Last but not least, they’ll be a performance from Marie Dance - a wonderful folk musician, storyteller & performer. She’s become known for her rich acoustic sound, poetic lyrics, and Americana influence. Alongside her band, The Purple Shoes, she’s played at major festivals like Cambridge Folk Festival and Black Deer 2024. Their debut album Small Town Fairy Tales drew critical praise, while their second record January Sun landed features in Mojo and Fatea Magazine, and sold out its hometown launch.
It’s due to be an incredible evening art in the beautiful Folklore Rooms.
