Deep in Aberdeenshire, on the coast of Stonehaven, is located one of the most stunning medieval ruins you will find anywhere in the world. Dunnottar Castle was built as a fortress and you will see why as soon as you get there. It is perched on a cliff, high above sea-level, surrounded by the North Sea. It was here that the Scottish crown jewels were hidden from Oliver Cromwell and his English army who invaded in the 17th century.

It has been used as a film set for the Disney film, Brave, and has a striking resemblance to many castle scenes in the Game of Thrones.
