Welcome to the Light Source Night School Talks Program
We are pleased to present our second talk in our series, by Dr Marisa Carnesky- The Incredible Bleeding Woman.
Dr Marisa Carnesky will talk about the process of her project The Incredible Bleeding Woman and how the creation of new performative cultural menstrual rituals was informed by research around ritual and cyclicity. She will look at how the work was informed by existing menstrual rituals from different cultures, reinterpreted through a feminist and queer lens, and explore the symbol of the witch and menstrual symbolism in contemporary esoteric practices.
Marisa Carnesky, is a British live artist and showwoman. She is best known for her critically acclaimed immersive theatre ride Carnesky’s Ghost Train which ran for over a decade and more recently her touring company show Dr Carnesky’s Incredible Bleeding Woman which explored reinventing menstrual rituals through new performance practices. She uses spectacular entertainment forms, including fairground devices and stage illusion to explore themes of contemporary ritual, women in entertainment history, feminism and cultural identity. She also runs Carnesky’s Radical Cabaret School- an alternative stage school for emerging artists. She holds a PhD from Middlesex University and is working on a new project called Showwwomen for 2022.
Light Source is a program of talks exploring Witch Hunts and Ritual Performance hosted by artist Amy Kingsmill.
This is our second talk in a series of 12 monthly talks and workshops on these themes, please check back at our website as we announce our full list of speakers and dates.
