'basics' is a series of shows which fuses stripped-back music and poetry sets in intimate venues around Brighton. The diverse and carefully curated line-ups have generated a growing reputation around the city and led to every show being sold-out in advance. The last show appeared three times in the Folklore Room's ‘staff's picks of 2024’ and received outstanding reviews from Rapture Magazine & WeLoveBrighton.
Returning from her European headline tour to bless ‘basics’ with a headline performance is one of Brighton’s brightest stars, Kymara. Her music is a beautiful combination of Nina Simone's storytelling, D'Angelo's soulfulness and the purity and rawness of Janis Joplin. This powerful combination has led her to go on tour with Rag'N’Bone Man, sell out Brighton Dome Studio & play at festivals such as North Sea Jazz festival, Lakefest, The Great Escape. She’s also received the Drake YolanDa Award, who support the most exciting up & coming artists.
The first support act is the multi-award winning cellist, William Jack. Playing almost any genre with a single Cello, the classically trained musician has toured the world, blowing audiences away and providing them with a fresh take on the instrument. His incredible music has generated support from Universal Music, Audio Network, Radio 3, BBC Introducing and more.
Joining these amazing musicians will be Danny Mash, a fantastic poet who is currently gaining national attention for eye-opening, hilarious and cynical writing. A performance of his poem, ‘Beautiful British’, gained over 2.2 million views on Instagram and has been going viral on TikTok too. He’ll be coming down from London for a rare Brighton performance at basics | VOLUME 4.
It’s due to be an incredible evening art in the beautiful Folklore Rooms.
