Witches Of Scotland- Women Not Witches

Tickets £10- Zoom talk 7pm GMT

Witches of Scotland- Claire Mitchell QC and Zoe Venditozzi will be discussing their radical campaign in regards to getting the Scottish people accused of witchcraft- a pardon, a monument and a national monument. Over the course of their project they have interviewed many specialists surrounding Witch Trials, through this talk they will discuss the evolution of the project, as an oral history and a legal petition for real change, and some of the ripple effects of their work across the world.

Witches of Scotland is a campaign for justice; for a legal pardon, an apology and national monument for the thousands of people – mostly women - that were convicted of witchcraft and executed between 1563 and 1736 in Scotland. The campaign was started by Claire Mitchell QC when she realised how little women were represented in monuments and statues and how scant our knowledge was about this hideous miscarraige of justice. Claire brought writer and teacher Zoe Venditozzi on board, and the campaign was officially launched on International Women's Day 2020. Since then, they have recorded over fifty episodes of their hugely popular podcast where they have interviewed a whole host of academics, historians, writers, artists and campaigners about the topic. The campaign is now being considered by the Scottish parliament and the campaign grows in support daily. Sadly, the issue of witchcraft accusations is not resigned to the past and as cases occur internationally, Claire and Zoe push on with their campaign.
