Mushroom Foraging & Wild Food Cooking 24th Sep

Come and discover Nature’s Autumn Larder in beautiful Suffolk landscape and learn how to get the taste of the wild in your diet.

Autumn is the season when mushrooms become obvious in the woods and the meadows. Join us to discover the variety of fungi, their shapes, colours, smells, textures and tastes from Earth Stars and Bird's Nests to Beefsteak and Chicken of the Woods so if you are interested in all things fungi then this course is definitely for you.

You will spend the morning with foraging expert and Michel Roux trained chef, Carl Shillingford and expert botanist Matthew Rooney who will lead the forage through ancient woodland near the village of Bures, nestled in stunning Constable country.

After a full morning of foraging, everyone decamps to an award winning, rural Suffolk pub approx. 10 minutes drive away where you can freshen up and use the facilities. You will then be treated to a delicious range of tasters created, in front of your eyes, in Carl’s field kitchen, using your foraged ingredients.

The day ends with everyone receiving a fabulous Goodie Bag filled with recipes, a foraging calendar, and a selection of wild food products including dried mushrooms, wild soup and sour dough bread.

This is a fantastic opportunity to spend time with two fantastic experts, gaining a wealth of knowledge and picking up lots of top tips about some of the incredible produce that grows wild in our countryside.

Tickets cost £75 which includes booking fees, a full morning of foraging, the cooking demo and tastings plus Goodie Bag. Dates may be transferable after booking but only with 6 weeks' notice.

The event is limited to 20 spaces so please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

By Car: Tiger Hill is across the road from Arger Fen and is between the villages of Nayland and Bures in Suffolk. On the Bures-Nayland road, 1.5 miles east of Bures is a crossroads. South is signposted Smallbridge Hall and Wormingford. North is Church's Seed Store and Arger Fen. Follow the road north past the seed store and the Arger Fen car park on the right. Continue down the hill, through the ford and up the other side. The entrance to Tiger Hill is at the top of the hill on the left. Parking is free.

By Train: Nearest station is Bures on the Marks Tey to Sudbury Line. Trains leave Marks Tey at 15mins past the hour. If travelling from London Liverpool Street change at Chelmsford or Witham for trains stopping at Marks Tey.

By Foot/Bike: Tiger Hill is a little over 1 mile from Bures Station. Cross the bridge into the village. Follow the High Street and Cuckoo Hill to join St Edmunds Way Path at Fysh House Farm. At Over Hall Farm follow the road north to Arger Fen and Tiger Hill.

Please note: you will need to arrange a lift with a fellow forager to the Edwardstone pub for the cooking demonstration if arriving on foot.

What do I need to bring?

The forage will last 2-3 hours and you will cover a fair distance in this time. The ground can be slippery, muddy and uneven and you must be prepared to forage in all weather conditions.

Please wear waterproof footwear, ideally walking boots otherwise wellies will do. Please bring suitable waterproof clothing in case of wet weather and always have a warm coat with you. In dry sunny weather, we recommend you have a bottle of water, sunscreen and a hat.

Bring a basket or cotton shopping bag for foraging. Notepad, smartphone or digital camera would be useful for recording.
