Spring Forage & Wild Food Cooking Demo held upstairs at Lavenham Farmers' Market

This event differs slightly from our other foraging events purely because it is run as part of our workshop series held upstairs at Lavenham farmers market which means it starts earlier and ends at Lavenham Village Hall.

On March 26th you will join Carl Shillingford, forager and local chef and Matthew Rooney, plant specialist and ecologist, for an early morning spring forage in beautiful rural Suffolk countryside before heading back to Lavenham farmers' market for refreshments, a spot of market browsing and a delicious wild food cooking demo.

Our Spring Forage Days take place close to Arger Fen near the village of Bures in the heart of rural Suffolk and focus on the best wild vegetables and herbs including wild garlic, alexanders, hog weed, water cress, broom,  cleavers, cow parsley and even the common nettle.

During the morning we’ll walk through the many different habitats in the reserve talking about, but not picking (the subtle difference between a foray and forage), a wide variety of plants and a selection of fungi. Following this, we are lucky enough to go onto an area of private land outside the reserve where people will be able to pick some wild garlic before you all head back to Lavenham village hall.

After half an hour to browse around the award winning farmers' market you head upstairs for tea, coffee and an amazing wild food cooking demo full of delicious tasty samples and lunchtime treats including the best wild salads, hedgerow pestos, spring soups and lots more.

Every forager then receives a Goodie Bag complete with recipes and a selection of wild food products including hedgerow pesto, wild soup and sour dough bread.

Tickets cost just £50 to include refreshments, the guided forage, cooking demo and Goodie Bag.

If you are buying the ticket as a gift, please do let us know and we can email you a Gift Voucher cover to use for your ticket. Just email justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk

FAQs
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
We will meet everyone at the small Arger Fen Reserve car park at 8.30am. Parking is free.
Google Map link to Arger Fen car park.

By Car : Arger Fen is between the vilages of Nayland and Bures in Suffolk. On the Bures-Nayland road, 1.5ml east of Bures is a crossroads. South is signposted Smallbridge Hall and Wormingford. North is Churchs Seed Store and Arger Fen. Follow the road north past the seed store to the Arger Fen car park on the right. Meet at the car park. Parking is free.

By Train: Nearest station is Bures on the Marks Tey to Sudbury Line.

By Foot/Bike : Arger Fen is about 1ml from Bures Station. Cross the bridge into the village. Follow the High Street and Cuckoo Hill to join St Edmunds Way Path at Fysh House Farm. At Over Hall Farm follow the road north to Arger Fen.

Please note that the cooking demo takes place about 20 minute drive away in Lavenham so if you arrive on foot you will need to arrange to catch a lift with another forager to Lavenham.

What do I need to bring?

The forage will last until around 10.30am and you will cover a fair distance in this time. The  ground can be slippery, muddy and uneven and you must be prepared to forage in all weather conditions.
Please wear waterproof footwear, ideally walking boots otherwise wellies will do. Please bring suitable waterproof clothing in case of wet weather and always have a warm coat with you. In dry sunny weather, we recommend you have a bottle of water, sunscreen and a hat.

It is a good idea to bring a basket for foraging, a notepad and a camera/Smartphone if you wish to take photos for identification purposes  and a large pair of scissors for cropping wild garlic.
Once the forage is finished you will leave for Lavenham where the demo will start at around 11.30am and last about 90 minutes. We usually finish at about 1pm.
