Vassa Zheleznova

The Zheleznovs are a shipping family in the final days of the Russian Empire, financially wealthy but morally bankrupt. Matriarch Vassa runs both firm and family with an iron fist. But her power is waning, and her children are rebelling. Meanwhile, the Russian Tsar’s empire is equally on its last legs, as workers go on strike, police corruption is rampant, and the newspapers are fishing for juicy scandals in the Zheleznov family.

Vassa Zheleznova (1910) is a prime example of the work of Russian author Maxim Gorky famed for his portrayals of the working classes and his scrutinising of power systems.

WARNING: Contains strong language, and themes of murder and suicide.

Admission: £3
