The Black Seeds was born in Wellington NZ in 1998, from a bunch of like minded individuals who met through a love for funk, soul and Dub Reggae at the Alternative radio station, then, Radio Active 89fm. It signalled a musical shift from the grunge era into a love and appreciation for roots music with a conscious message and a vintage groove.
The Black Seeds, 20 years young, continue to blend and perform their own unique and easily identifiable pacific sound. Inside it lies carefully selected ingredients inspired from Jamaican studio production, American funk, psychedelic colours and meaningful lyrics. There is an evolution you can hear for yourself between releases ‘Keep On Pushing’, ‘on The Sun’, ‘Into The Dojo’, ‘Solid Ground’, ‘Dust and Dirt’ and the more recent ‘Fabric’ albums, a sense of moving forward while still retaining the essence and integrity of the seeds.
