POSTPONED History of Video Games - The Lost Arcade - Bristol

Without Deviation from
the norm, progress is not possible... Future Artists Communique
18/3/20

'Without Deviation from
the norm, progress is not possible', is a quote from Frank Zappa..
which has been the founding mission statement of my company and arts
collective, Future Artists..

My name is Mark Ashmore
by the way.. I guess I am the founder of this thing.. but really it's
the artists, technicians, visionary's and entrepreneurs whom are so
creative that day to day, and especially over the last 3 years, I
have had the pleasure of working with, creating with, laughing with
and crying with...

Certainly the tears
have been genuine this week, along with the deep dark seeds of
anxiety and depression...

I am writing this
message to you as your a fan of our work, and you might also have
purchased a ticket to either History of Video Games Bristol, History
of Video Games High Wycombe, or Skank – the play in Manchester,
Preston or Brighton – or perhaps you backed our Dyslexia animation
project last year, which we crowd-funded.... perhaps we met once, or
just stepped onto our social media pages as you thought, oh
interesting?

firstly, let me take
this time to thank you all for coming to our events, for taking the
risk on buying a ticket to an unknown comedy by an unknown artist and
doing so because perhaps you believe in what we do, perhaps you just
fancied a night out, or you like us, love video game culture...

and with Dyslexia and
the creative mindset project – you believed in an idea, an idea I
communicated to you... I can't not thank you enough for this.. when I
founded Future Artists, besides the above Quote, we also said that we
needed to have an audience to support the 'future thinking work' and
we could not rely on governments or arts councils.. instead, we live
and die by our audience..

and today........ with
a heavy heart, and tears running down my cheeks..... I am looking at
every option possible to not fold up the company and die....

I am trying my best to
survive... to this end all staff have been put on part pay and on
garden leave for 3 months (all I could afford), and projects such as
Skank which was enjoying a high calibre theatre festival run, all
shows are cancelled, leaving two staff unemployed, and we are looking
at ways to support them via government help..

I have also paid my
entire supply chain from the indie companies I work with to the big
corps.. As you can imagine, having 3 major projects collapse through
no fault of your own, in the space of a few days, with a team of 4
people.. that's going to be pressure.. but the Future Artists team
have been fantastic and I think we have landed nice and softly.. with
the engine intact.. but nothing in the tank for lift off... and right
now, all planes are grounded!

So what does this mean
in a practical sense... if you have purchased a ticket, you are
entitled to a refund of course, but let me explain that process to
you..

we use Fatsoma, whom
are an innovative social media based ticket agency from Manchester
and an indie agency, Future Artists and Fatsoma were founded around
the same time in Manchester in 2009– and fatsoma make there money
and pay there 20+ staff via commission from every ticket sold, which
is around £1, then credit card companies get a bit, then we get a
bit.

because we have had to
close up shop, at the government say so.. in less than a few days,
this means we still have to pay suppliers and staff, and the social
media marketing, and everything else that goes into an event... due
to the cost of everything, we expected to break even in May 2020 on
these events, but this being middle of March.. we are not there.... I
have put my small savings, and also borrowed money from friends to
prop up the company... hopefully, I have done enough.

so what I am asking you
to do is, keep hold of your ticket, to any of our events you have
purchased, and when the time is right, when all this is over, you can
redeem it at any history of video games event, or any performance of
Skank plus!!!!! We will give you a free ticket to the next great idea
we create, or perhaps you want to come twice to the aforementioned
events.. then its a deal... by keeping your money in these two
companies, you enable us to keep just a little bit of fuel in the
engine, so we can pivot.. which is business speak for doing something
else..

It is apparent that
live physical events and community video game spaces in a pandemic,
are 1) not good for society, we would be negligent if we opened up
and caused a spike in cases to the NHS 2) its not safe for staff and
performers and 3) we believe that this is a war effort, and we should
use our skills, network and time to defeating this hidden enemy.. and
for go profits.. profits which get spent on artists development
anyway!

So we want to pivot for
a short while and take a breathe... allow society to collapse and
then be part of the re-build project...

To this ends, Future
Artists are working on making sure you, our community are informed
with the latest government information and news from genuine news
sites, we aim to combat fake news, we also believe we should
entertain you a little, so expect some digital content from the
archives and from our network landing on your news feed and lastly,
most important is how to care for the elderly and the vulnerable in
society.

I will be using the
time away from Future Artists, during this forced hiatus to take an
active part in making sure my local community is fed, watered and
have what they need, while I am able to... and hopefully, when I get
ill.. which I will, someone will look after me (I live on my own)

I'll share things I
will invent to do this, so you can to...

I built future artists
with an amazing group of creatives and an amazing audience, some of
which have become friends and even worked with us.... This is our
hour of need..

It is time to put the
mission statement to the test and deviate from the norm..... and I
hope you can support us, when we figure out what that is....

And if you do need that
refund, the details are on the Fatsoma website, everything is done
via credit cards and such..

It looks like this path
has ended... it is time to rest.. but we must not quit.... Future
Artists to bed...

Goodnight... and I will
see you when it is time to wake up.

Hope and Unity from
Mark Ashmore and all the team at History of Video Games, Team Skank,
and Dyslexia and the creative mindset project...

Without deviation from
the norm, progress is not possible..... Mx

A Lost Video Game Arcade has been discovered in Bristol!!! and will be open until March 22nd 2020.

*Building workers, recently renovating an old dock building at the Harbourside in Bristol have stumbled across what is thought to be ' a lost video game arcade from the late
20th century' 100s of vintage and retro video games from the 1970s, 80s and 90s..... upon finding this haul, the developers for the scheme called in the 'History of Video Games team'.

A Spokesperson for the 'History of video games' says ' this huge collection of classic arcade machines was discovered in Bristol, and we were called in to see if they worked, and to get them cleaned up
and back into use and then create an event for them'

The event in question will be 'The History of Video Games Presents – The Lost Arcade' which is open until March 22nd 2020 as a short term pop up event on Millennium Promenade (off Millennium Square, opposite Pizza Express on the Harbourside) we have a space for over 100+ arcade machines, with a huge collection of retro consoles from Sega, Nintendo, Atari and Playstation, and a giant pick n mix stand!
